“THERE SHE IS.” NOLAN’S voice rings across the field, causing me to freeze at the same time as my heart does a stutter step.

This is the moment I have been anticipating since Nolan’s feet safely touched back down on the ground. I have been pretending to chat with Ruby, Charlotte, Jenna, Marisol, and Fae, who all graciously stayed to keep me company while I waited for Nolan to finish his after climbing routine, but I haven’t paid attention to anything they are saying.

I have been waiting for Nolan.

Working hard to play it cool, I turn slowly. “Nolan. I—”

Before I can get all my words out, he leans in and seals his lips over mine. My neurons fight for air as one of his arms curls around my waist, pulling me close against him. I should push him away. There are rules, and this violates every single one of them. Okay, there is technically only one actual rule. But there are a dozen others that I came up with while waiting for him, because there are only so many bags of potato chips a girl can eat to get over a guy. But I have just enough awareness left to remember that there are people watching and pushing Nolan away would look suspicious.

Not that I am sure that I could even manage it. I seem to have lost control of my limbs.

He releases my waist, and his hand snakes up into my hair, increasing the pressure of the kiss. The world spins out of focus, and suddenly the only things I am aware of are the heat of our bodies pressed together and the aroma of evergreen, vanilla, and cloves. How is it that he smells like Christmas?

“Seriously?”

Arianna’s voice lances through the haze, bringing me crashing back to the present. I press my hands against Nolan’s muscular chest, desperately ignoring the desire to curl my hands into his shirt and pull him closer. She might not even be referring to us, but it doesn’t matter because she is right. I can’t do this. Both out of loyalty to Emily, and because I am on a precipice.

“You can’t do that.” I step further away from him, needing space so my brain can breathe. I need to make good decisions right now. The bachelor auction is tonight, which means my time with Nolan is running out, and I don’t want even a minute of it to be awkward. I also want to still be in possession of my heart when it is all done.

A slow smile spreads across his face. “That’s exactly how every competition should end.”

I run a hand through my hair, not caring about the mess of curls I am creating. The world feels like it is tipping, and I am not sure what my next move should be. “There are rules.”

His smile widens, like a kid finding his Santa gift on Christmas morning, as he holds up the sprig of mistletoe from his foray up the cliff.
